We have had some fun changes at our home. We have a friend who has chickens. We have learned that Phil really loves the chickens so now as soon as we can get the coup together we have some she is going to make sure Phil has chickens. We are actually looking forward to this.
She also recently added a milk cow to her collection of fun things at her place. A couple of weeks ago she stopped me at church and asked if we would be interested in getting some milk from her. I thought it sounded fun, so not the me of yester-years, and told her that I would love some. I think David was nervous too.
So that evening we went to their place as a family and got the milk. Phil always makes sure that he checks for eggs and then he "needs" to bring them home with him. When Richelle saw us with our jars of "white stuff" she asked us what it was. Her face was like a mirror of mine from years ago when she proclaimed "I am not drinking that stuff." She said that she will spend her own money on milk from the store before she drinks that milk. It's funny because I remember wanting to make my own milk from powder before I was going to drink that dirty milk from the cow when we lived on our little farm. The first morning that we were using the milk I was trying to convince the kids that it was good and I have to admit that part of me was nervous when with all the kids were looking at me intently as I tried the first drink. Talk about pressure. Richelle still refused to drink it.
So, two gallons of fresh milk later (only 3 days) the kids (including Richelle now) are still asking me, "Mom, can I try that fresh milk again?" At this point it is not longer trying, it is straight drinking it like crazy! We have doubled our milk consumption.
We bought a sun tea container so that the milk and cream can separate and we can drink skim milk easily. Which has worked out fine until Sunday. David got the kids breakfast and then decided to shake the jar to get his milk all mixed. Would have been fine except I hadn't put milk on my cereal yet and now we don't have any other milk alternative choice! I had to have creamy milk! Thanks Dave!!!
The kids think the cream looks "yucky" but they enjoyed the creme brule that I have made lately. (3 batches in 2 weeks, good thing Phillip is getting the eggs!) I am currently looking for a good ice cream recipe as we now have a good collection of cream in the fridge.
The shoe was definitely on the other foot this morning when I has my friend delivering milk to my house, along with a doz. more eggs for Phil. I didn't deliver eggs, at least not that I can recall, but I remember delivering milk before seminary.
And I bet if any of my siblings or parents were asked I would be there less likely choice to have fresh milk in my house, be building a chicken coup and lets remember, I helped a horse giving birth.
Life is funny that way.
